Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas has temporarily split from his incredibly successful rock outfit to indulge in a pop release. The result is 2005's "Something To Be".
Attempting to capitalize on the success of his Santana duet "Smooth", Thomas has somewhat fallen short with "Something To Be". Maybe his branching out into pop should have been a one-off venture, but considering Thomas has won Billlboard's Songwriter Of The Year two years in a row one would expect the material to be a bit stronger than that heard on "Something To Be".
It is catchy at times, most notably single "Lonely No More", but for the most part it sounds like a rather cheesy Ricky Martin/Justin Timberlake/Backstreet Boys hybrid. WhichÅumÅisn't the best combination if you can imagine it.
